Provence Bouches–du–Rhône Guide

The Bouches–du–Rhône is the most westerly of the five Departments of Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur where the Rhône river runs into the Mediterranean Sea.

This Department, apart from its Roman history, truly charactarizes everyones' perception of Provence with its vineyards and olive trees and scent of Lavender. In effect this area of France represents the typical "art de vivre" — the art of good living.

The largest city is Marseilles, the Mediterranean's energetic and multi–cultural capital. Nearly 300 Kms of coast, run from La Ciotat to Saintes–Maries–de–la–Mer via the famous "Calanques de Cassis" and Martigues, is interspersed with cliffs, small fishing ports and beaches. One can find inland the true beauty of traditional Provence, in that the countryside features ancient villages and olive groves of the Alpilles, the vineyards and mansion houses of the Pays d'Aix nestling under the Sainte–Victoire mountain.

Finally there are the people and parties, from bull runs in wild Camargue to Fiestas in Marseilles, not forgetting Aix–en–Provence's numerous cultural festivals. The Bouches–du–Rhône really does have something for everyone — besides its amazing 300 days of sunshine per year! Getting there is easy, the region is well served by MP2, the airport of Marseille at Marignane.
