Just across the bridge from Le Touquet is the less famous but equally delightful port of Etaples sur Mer with its fishing and sailing boats. Etaples has all the usual facilities you would expect to find, ranging from a pony club to mini golf and numerous nautical attractions. A perfect spot to stop for a fishy lunch is ‘Aux Pecheurs d’Etaples’ just on the right as you approach the bridge coming from Boulogne. Here you can also buy fish to take home from the glistening display in the ground floor shop or dine in style on the first floor. In the main square of the old town, there is a bustling market on Tuesday and Friday mornings and the town is well served for shops, brasseries, bars and restaurants. The Hôtel le Charles VIII has an excellent restaurant and there is also the Hôtel de la Baie. Besides the sailing ‘Centre Nautique’, there is mini golf and nearby the House of the Flora and Fauna invites you to experience all the riches and pathways of the Nature Reserve of the Estuary of the Canche. History

Etaples had traces of Paleolithic man, the Iron Age and of course the Romans, but in the 14th,15th and 16th centuries it was repeatedly pillaged and burnt by various armies including the Normans, the British and the Duke of Lancaster to mention just a few. In 1596 a severe outbreak of plague decimated the population but the town always emerged from the ashes. The original Chateau dated from 1172 but was dismantled in 1641. It saw the signature of the Treaty of Etaples between Henry 7th of England and Charles 8th of France. The First World War brought such terrible conflict to the town that Etaples was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1920. To the north of the town, 11,000 Commonwealth servicemen lie in the Military Cemetery, overlooking the estuary, with an impressive monument designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It was inaugurated in 1922 by King George V and Field Marshall Douglas Haig.

The Mareis

From 1880 to 1914, a colony of artists established themselves at Etaples, drawn by the incredible light of the Bay of the Canche. This school rivalled those of Barbizon or Honfleur in its importance. A little further along the road is the Maréis – an amazing place where simulation allows you to experience being at the controls of a 24 metre trawler, steering it through all weathers, to stroke the fish that live in the Channel in shallow aquariums, and finally to learn how to tie nautical knots. Next to this is the Office de Tourism. The Atelier et Maison de la Miniature has over 280 models and the workshop where they are made is behind the house.

Musée de la Marine

Opposite the port is the Musée de la Marine, in the old fish market – a symbolic place for the fishermen. On 3 levels the museum deals with the lives of the local fishermen, their costumes, their religious festivals, the conditions under which they worked and so forth.
The Museum also covers the technicalities of fishing, the evolution of this trade, the naval carpentry, sails and other tools of the trade and a video covers the work of the trawler and of the fish to the end of the century. Nearby you can go on a 45 minute boat trip around the bay and see the nature reserve and a different view of the British Cemetery from the estuary. The Musée Quentovic deals with evolution, fossils, coral, the earliest vertebrates found in the cliffs of Cap Blanc Nez etc.

The charming walled town of Montreuil is a perfect destination for a weekend away with its beautiful old houses and churches, its imposing ramparts and its cobbled streets – not to mention a good selection of restaurants and hotels. In fact its origins lie in Roman times when the sea ran up the estuary of the Canche as far as Montreuil. The first ramparts were built in the 9th Century by the Count of Ponthieu and in the 10th Century Montreuil rose to importance as the main sea port of the Capétiens. Like Arras, Montreuil was famous for its cloth industry from the 11th to the 13th centuries. The eight churches drew pilgrims from far and wide thanks to the relics of saints they held. The population grew to over 10,000 people and the royal castle of which only two towers remain today, was built in 1186, a charter having been granted by Philip Auguste. As the estuary silted up, the port fell silent and when finally the English took possession of the town, Montreuil emerged from the Hundred Years’ War in ruins. It was to suffer further when it was plundered by Henry VIII of England and Charles V of Spain who laid siege but were rebuffed by the medieval walls. It fared less well in another siege in 1537 and finally succumbed to the plague in 1596.

History

Under Francois 1st, the town was recaptured and its fortifications modified and it subsequently became a major stronghold against the Spanish forces. In the reign of Louis XIV, Vauban strengthened and modernised the ramparts. However when the western flank of the Camp of Boulogne was installed in the town in 1837, the town regained a degree of importance, Marshals Soult and Ney making their headquarters there. Victor Hugo spent only one half day in Montreuil on the 4th September 1837 when he was on a voyage to the north with his mistress. Montreuil was immortalised by him when he decided to use it as the setting for “Les Miserables”. Every year it is performed in an outdoor ‘son et lumière’ at the end of July and beginning of August.

Museums

There are two museums in Montreuil. The Roger Rodière Museum in the 18th century hospital chapel has a collection of archeological pieces which chronicle the recent history of the town, as well as an impressive collection of funeral sculptures. The Hotel Acary has the ‘Musée de l’espoir de Franck et Mary Wooster’ in a property which Madame Wooster left to the commune on her death. There is a collection of furniture dating from the 18th–20th centuries and the architecture of the building is noteworthy too. From the ramparts you gain wonderful views of the surrounding countryside and just below them is the sleepy little riverside village of La Madelaine-Sous–Montreuil which also boasts a superb auberge/restaurant.

Abbey de Saint-Saulve

The 11th century Abbey of Saint-Saulve was built on the site of an even older monastery dedicated to Saint Walloy, founded by the Breton monks in the 10th century. Only the nave remains, the Imperialists having sacked the place in 1537, destroying the courtyard and the trancept. The Abbey is significant for the successful blend of Romanesque and gothic architecture which form one of the most beautiful ensembles of northern France. In the same square is the Chapelle de l’Hotel-Dieu, founded in 1200 by Gauthier de Maintenay and which retained its function as part of the hospital until 1992. Reconstructed under Napoleon the Third, this was followed by a restoration by Clovis Normand which only retained the flamboyant gateway of the 15th century. During the First World War, General Haig stationed his Headquarters in a chateau just outside Montreuil.

This delightful old Auberge stiuated at Sous-Madelaine, minutes from Montreuil-sur-Mer is a truly rustic restaurant that we all dream of finding.
Testimony to Veronique and Etienne Boutin, the chef, is that the Vieux Logis has been recommended by Guide de Routard for 14 years and Gault Millau for 6 years.

The fixed menus are ‘Le Solo’ – 12 Euros, ‘Le Duo’ – 19 Euros and ‘Le Trio’ – 22 Euros, one, two and three courses respectively. There is an A La Carte menu with prices of 14 Euros for ‘Les rognons de veau vieux logis, for example.

Try the house red wine at 11 Euros a 50cl pichet and 22 Euros for an excellent Bordeaux.

Closed on Tuesday evening, Wednesday all day and Sunday evenings.
