The district of Le Haut-de-Cagnes was listed as a historical site in 1948.  It has held on to the calm atmosphere of a village with its history-laden stones, its shady, narrow streets decorated with flowers, its unique viewpoints over the Mediterranean Sea and the Mercantour National Park  etc.  A number of artists, in love with the Mediterranean light, settled down in this pretty village known as “The Montmartre of the Côte d’Azur”.  The village also attracted celebrities from the universe of the arts and theatre until the 1960s. Dominating the district of Haut-de-Cagnes, the Château-Musée Grimaldi  (Grimaldi castle & museum)  a fort built in around 1300 and turned into a stately home in around 1620, is today the showcase for the collections of the Musée ethnographique de l’olivier  (Ethnographic Museum), the Donation Solidor  (Solidor Collection), the Musée d’Art moderne Méditerranéen [Mediterranean Museum of Modern Art ] and a number of contemporary art exhibitions.
